General Description

Main corpus copied by Netherlands court scribe B (= Martin Bourgeois?) (KellJ); later additions, by an unidentified Spanish scribe, on ff. 53'-55, 87'-88, 136'-142, and 284'-287. Main corpus copied in Brussels/Mechlin; belongs to Netherlands court complex (KellC). Originally prepared for the courtier Philippe Bouton (1418-1515)(KellCF). Manuscript subsequently taken to Spain, probably by the latter's son, Claude, or by a Spanish nobleman; later additions copied in Spain. Apparently owned in Spain by Folch de Cardona and Fernandez de Cordova families (coats of arms). Later owned by Fabio Chigi (1599-1667), elected Pope Alexander VII in 1655. Chigi family collection purchased by Italian government in 1918; ceded to present library in 1923.

XVe s. 289ff. Parchemin, 370 x 275 mm. Foliotation ancienne souvent fautive en eh. romains: I-CCLXXVIII en haut des ff. et foliotation moderne imprimée au bas des ff. Dans la foliotation ancienne, le f. LXXVIII est suivi de LXXIIII; le ch. CXV est répété deux fois. Dans la foliotation moderne, les ff. 1 à 3, 18v, 19, 34v, 35, 63v, 64, 114v, 115, 142v, 143, 172v, 173, 212v, 213, 240v, 241, 287v à 289v sont blancs. Notation mesurée blanche. 9 portées par p. Lettres et marges ornées de miniatures. Reliure velours rouge, coins métal. Au plat intérieur: Tabla de missas y motetes. Ms. franco-flamand copié dans le dernier quart du XVe s et tout au début du XVIe, vraisemblablement entre 1498 et 1501, probablement par Martin Bourgeois qui, depuis 1498, était calligraphe de musique au service de Marguerite d'Autriche. Les miniatures, de style flamand, sont généralement attribuées à l'atelier du «Maître de l'Hortulus animae» actif à Gand entre 1480 et 1520. Les armoiries qui figurent au f. 20 ont été d'abord attribuées (Besseler, in MGG) à la famille Van der Hoyen de Gand pour laquelle le ms. aurait été constitué. Van der Straeten (VII, 125f) le considère comme lié au répertoire de la chapelle de Philippe le Beau qui l'aurait transporté en Espagne à l'un de ses voyages, ce qui expliquerait les 7 pièces supplémentaires (nos 5, 10, 16, 17, 18, 19, 40) copiées en Espagne en même temps que la Tabla en espagnol, confirmé par la glose italienne collée sur la garde du volume: «usato in Spagna». Cependant, des recherches plus récentes (Keilman) ont amené à la conclusion que le ms. serait en relation avec la famille bourguignonne Bouton dont les armes figurent au f. 219v (facsim. Keilman, Josquin), le nom Bouton sur lequel on a superposé Dieu au f. 282 (facsim., id.) et enfin la devise «ung soeul Button» vers la fin du ms. Commandé directement par le poète Philippe Bouton, qui entretint les meilleures relations avec la cour de France de 1488 jusqu'à sa mort en 1515 (ce qui expliquerait la grande place tenue par Ockeghem dans le ms.), ce recueil aurait été préparé par son fils Claude Bouton, courtisan au service de Philippe le Beau, ramenant ainsi à l'hypothèse du passage du ms. en Espagne. La pièce no 16, en tout cas, n'a pu être incorporée avant 1514 (mort d'Anne de Bretagne).
