General Description

Main corpus (pp. 2-139) copied by a single scribe; in late 16th or early 17th century, other scribes added instrumental pieces in guitar tablature on pp. 140-198. Copied in northern Italy, possibly at Milan. Inscription in later hand on parchment leaf at beginning: 'Ad usura d. Caroli Bellini.' Possibly acquired in early 19th century by Marchese G. G. Trivulzio (d. 1831) of Milan, but may have belonged to Trivulzio family at an earlier period. Trivulzio library later incorporated in Archivio Storico Civico. Original final leaf of first gathering later misbound as second leaf in same gathering, confusing original sequence of pieces and separating voice parts of several pieces.

RISM

XVe/XVIe s. 232 p. (= 116ff). Papier (1 p. de garde parchemin, n. ch.), 112 x 162 mm. Pagination moderne en haut des p. jusqu'à la p. 198. La p. 1 et les 34 dernières sont blanches. Notation mesurée blanche. 5 portées par p. Lettres ornées à la plume avec quelques profils. Reliure du XVIe s. (dos rénové) en cuir estampé avec liens de cuir.

Ce ms., entré à la bibliothèque des Trivulzio à une date inconnue, est depuis quelques années conservé à l'Archivio storico civico au Castel Sforzesco de Milan (Biblioteca Trivulziana). La partie la plus ancienne du ms. (la seule dont il est question ici) s'arrête à la p. 139 (f. 70) et a été copiée par un seul scribe en Italie au plus tard dans les premières années du XVIe s. Suivent ensuite des danses en tablature de guitare de la fin du XVIe - début du XVIIe s. Au v° du f. limin. n.ch. et de la même époque que la tablature: «Ad usum D. Caroli Bellini.» Sauf 1 pièce religieuse (no 61), répertoire profane dont 12 frottole se retrouvent dans les recueils de Petrucci imprimés de 1504 à 1507.

Modern pagination, 1-198 (last 34 pages, with blank staves only, not numbered). Original covers of dark brown tooled leather. No index.
