RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 14th century parchment manuscript meas. 202 x 150 mm. and containing 26 folios, not including the triangular stub flyleaf at the back. The right half of f. 1 is largely missing. There is a paper flyleaf in addition at both front and back belonging to the fairly recent white card binding. Both Martini and Gasparini have left notes at the front. The foliation is in modern pencil at t.r.r. The contents are very varied and include Alleluias, Tro and sequences, pieces for the mass ordinary and even odd motets. The polyphony is in score throughout on a single stave, and the counterpoint is distinguished from the cf. by the use of red notes. Most of the notation is of the typical square unmeasured 13th century variety, though the motets attempt to distinguish between longs and breves. Single notes are usually longs, while the staves, of which there may be 4, 5 or 7 per page, are divided into two categories. They may be of the five-line type in brown ink with or without a yellow c-line or red f-line, or of the red four-line variety. A different type of notation occurs on f. 4 in which single notes are semibreves divided up by lines of division. Two or three semibreves are sometimes joined up in ligatures of the kind to be seen at the end of the lower voice in Bol 1. The script is Beneventan and initials may be alternately red and blue, or simply blue, or blue-red. Apparently Bol originated in a Central Italian nunnery.
