Eight initials, removed from elsewhere, have been pasted at the beginnings of eight pieces; these appear to be in the style of the Ferrarese school of manuscript illumination. On f. 2' is an ink drawing of a white stag lying under a tree, pasted to a black rectangular piece of paper; the initials 'D.P.' have been written over the drawing.

Foliotation ancienne: 1-203, ne tenant pas compte des 6ff. limin. chiffrés postérieurement 1-6, mais correspondant à celle de la table. Les ff. limin. [I, IIv] sont blancs. Notation mesurée blanche. 10 portées par p. Aux ff. Umin. [rVv-VI] table alphabétique du ms. de 1a main du scribe. Au f. limin. [III], vignette collée postérieurement (Cf. plus bas). Quelques lettres et marges ornées or et coul, découpées d'un autre ms. et collées. Reliure ancienne cuir estampé, liens de coton.

Ce ms. tire son surnom du fait qu'il appartenait à la bibliothèque du marquis Rusconi qui le vendit vers 1862 à Bologne. Il figure dans l'inventaire du Civico museo rédigé en 1888 comme «acquisto recente.» Le filigrane (ancre dans un cercle qui indique un papier vénitien du début du XVIe s.) correspond bien à la date inscrite au f. limin. [Iv]: «1518 adi 10 de zugno.» De nombreuses hypothèses ont été émises concernant l'origine du ms.: alors que Jeppesen pense qu'il a été compilé et copié par Sebastiano Festa qui se serait ainsi réservé le no 1 (MGG IV: S. Festa), Lowinsky penche pour Costanzo Festa et considère que le cerf surmonté des initiales D P qui figure au f. limin. [III] représente l'emblème de Diane de Poitiers à laquelle le ms. aurait appartenu. Enfin Crawford estime que le ms. aurait été copié par les Festa, sinon à Bologne même, du moins dans la région. Quoiqu'il en soit, il s'agit non pas d'un ms. d'apparat, mais d'un ms. d'usage privé, et copié, plutôt que par un scribe professionnel, par un musicien, italien, si l'on en juge par la date rédigée en italien et par l'orthographe fautive des 8 chansons françaises qui, de surcroit, ne comportent que les premiers mots du texte, alors que les pièces religieuses (92) sont pourvues d'un texte complet. On peut remarquer cependant que la graphie «Maester Jhaen» pour Maitre Jan (no 91) est plus nordique qu'italienne, tandis que le texte macaronique germanique du canon no 98, avec l'allusion à la mortadel, peut évoquer la région Modène-Ferrare-Mantoue à laquelle appartiennent en tout cas, deux des compositeurs du ms.: Fogliano et Symon.
