General Description

A combination of two smaller manuscripts (ff. 1-120 and ff. 121-216), compiled mostly from Petrucci prints of 1501-3. Copied in northern Italy, probably at the Mantuan court (AtlCM); copied in Florence or somewhere in Tuscany (JepFR). The manuscript is in one hand except for ff. 207'-209. Inscription on f. ii: 'Cantilene sacre e profane.'

RISM

XVIe s. 216ff. (+ au début et à la fin, 1 f. de garde de parchemin tiré d'un bréviaire du XIIe s. et 9ff. récents n.ch. et blancs). Papier, 153 x 214 mm. Foliotation ancienne jusqu'au f. 120, puis moderne à l'encre rouge jusqu'à la fin. Les ff. 89, 104, 120v à 130, 145v, 146, 156v à 207, 213v à 216 sont blancs. Au f. 216v, exercices de notation proportionnelle. Notation mesurée blanche. 6 portées par p.

Ce ms., qui provient de la bibliothèque Panciatichi, famille patricienne de Florence, est généralement considéré comme originaire de cette ville ou tout au moins de Toscane, bien que le filigrane d'un papier de Reggio Emilia, les liens de certains compositeurs avec Mantoue, la prédominance de Vénitiens parmi les compositeurs de pièces italiennes, parlent aussi en faveur de l'Italie du nord (Cattin). Il semble nous être parvenu intact, avec 27 cahiers écrits d'une même main (sauf rares exceptions); mais il est possible qu'il ait consisté primitivement en 2 mss.: I- du. f. 1 à 120 (cahiers 1 à 15 avec foliotation ancienne). II- du f. 130 à la fin (cahiers 17 à 27), le 16e cahier entièrement vide, f. 121 à 129, séparant ces deux parties lors de leur réunion sous une seule reliure. Sur les 187 compositions, on compte 97 pièces latines, 77 sur texte ou titre italiens, 10 chansons françaises, 1 flamande et 2 sans texte et qu'on n'a pu rétablir. 16 concordances avec le ms. F-Pn 676 daté de 1502, 7 avec le 1er livre de Frottole de Petrucci et 7 avec le 3e, imprimés en 1504-1505, en même temps que l'écriture du copiste, situent la compilation du ms. dans les premières années du XVIe s.
