General Description

Copied by one main scribe, whose hand also appears in MilD 3 (Rifkin); later insertions by Franchino Gafori, who also copied ParmC 1158 and portions of MilD 1, MilD 2, and MilD 3. The composers of several works are conjectural, based on descriptions of manuscript before fire damage, and lists of works by Compère and Gafori for which there are no other known sources. Many unidentified pieces probably by Gafori. Copied in Milan, for use by the cathedral choir; prepared under direction of Franchino Gafori, maestro di cappella from 1484 until his death in 1522.

Physical Description

Seriously damaged by fire in 1906 while on display at international art exhibit in Milan. Some folios completely destroyed; charring of edges of surviving folios obliterated some music, all original foliation, and attributions. Restored 1914-6 by Achille Ratti, prefect of Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan.

Les restes de ce ms., très sévèrement brûlé en 1906 à l'Exposition de Milan, sont maintenant conservés dans 10 cassettes à l'Archivio della Fabbrica del Duomo. De nombreux ff. ayant été complètement détruits et les autres très endommagés, la description est ici donnée d'après les catalogues antérieurs à 1906 (cf. Bibliographie). A la p. 169 des Annali, on a noté: «In fine dell'altro codice manoscritto … sta scritto Liber Franchini Gafuri musici praefitiensis die 22 junii 1527», note qui ne peut concerner que ce Librone 4 et qui fixe la date finale de la copie, indiquant ainsi que celle-ci a été faite quelques années après la mort de Gaffurio, dont de nombreuses oeuvres (Messes, Magnificat, motets) figuraient dans le ms. Une restauration commencée par Achille Ratti (futur Pie XI) en 1914, puis améliorée en 1953 par Onesta Benetti de l'Istituto di patologia del libro de Rome, a permis de déchiffrer ce qui reste des parties de T et B, le Sup. et l'A ayant à peu près complètement disparu. Aucune pièce ne peut donc être transcrite en entier et, comme on trouve dans Sartori les incipit musicaux des T et B qui ont pu être déchiffres, que le facs. du ms. est maintenant réalisé, il a semblé inutile de donner ici le dépouillement d'un ms. dont, de surcroit, tous les noms de compositeurs ont disparu.

144 paper folios of an original 200?, now of irregular and varying sizes (original size ca. 400 x 300). Seriously damaged by fire in 1906 while on display at international art exhibit in Milan. Some folios completely destroyed; charring of edges of surviving folios obliterated some music, all original foliation, and attributions. Restored 1914-6 by Achille Ratti, prefect of Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan. Surviving folios preserved unbound in 10 boxes, numbered 34-43.

Copied by one main scribe, whose hand also appears in MilD 3 (Rifkin); later insertions by Franchino Gafori, who also copied ParmC 1158 and portions of MilD 1, MilD 2, and MilD 3. Inked initials and voice designations. Composer list above includes several conjectural identifications based on descriptions of manuscript before fire damage, and lists of works by Compère and Gafori for which there are no other known sources. Many unidentified pieces probably by Gafori.

Early 16th century. Copied in Milan, for use by the cathedral choir; prepared under direction of Franchino Gafori, maestro di cappella from 1484 until his death in 1522.
