General Description

Composite of originally separate fascicles. The main scribe was Claudius Gellandi; ff. 190'-199' copied by Johannes Orceau; later text corrections by Johannes Parvus on f. 71' and f. 76 (DeanS). Copied in Rome, for use by Cappella Sistina.

DIAMM, 2017
Binding

Covers of medium brown leather over boards, blind tooled with decorative borders and central diamond motif; brass clasps, studs, and bosses. Covers date from 18th century (LlorCS), but decoration imitates earlier style; see VatS 13 for other manuscripts with similar bindings.

Decoration

Pen-and-wash miniatures and initials on f. 3' include coat of arms of Medici pope; DeanS identifies arms as those of Pope Leo X (1475-1521), and refutes earlier assertions that arms are those of Pope Clement VII (ca. 1475-1534). Other folios have inked calligraphic initials, some decorated with floral tracery, animals, birds, human faces, etc.

RISM Description

RISM

XVIe s. 202ff. + 2ff. limin. Papier, 555 x 420 mm.

On lit au f. 1.[3]: «Requiescat in pace.
