General Description

Composite of originally separate fascicles. The main scribe was Johannes Orceau (SherrPC). Three additional scribes: (scribe 1) ff. 14'-38'; (scribe 2) ff. 39'-44, 59'-63, 65'-70 (also wrote most of VatS 15, ff. 218'-227 of VatS 23, ff. 87'-103 of VatS 41, and ff. 36'-55, 69'-93, and 129'-140 of VatS 49; (scribe 3) ff. 71'-75 (also wrote ff. 38'-49 of VatS 41 and ff. 56'-68 of VatS 49). Copied in Rome, for use by Cappella Sistina. French heraldry probably connected with visit of King Charles VIII to Rome in 1495 (SherrPC).

Decoration

Watercolour initial on f. 65' depicts Madonna and Child, with crown and fleur-de-lis above Virgin's head. Other folios have inked initials, mostly in calligraphic style, decorated with tracery, grotesque faces, birds, etc. Heraldic emblems on f. 75 (closed crown with three fleurs-de-lis) probably associated with Charles VIII, King of France (SherrPC).
