General Description

This manuscript is related to the complementary fragment I-OST. This means that today a total of 9 double sheets survive of this oldest known source of Italy's secular Trecento music. The original extent of this source in this hand must have amounted to at least 16 double leaves (4 quaternions). It was most likely written iin Padua and Verona. The MS belonged to the bibliophile GF de Rossi († 1854) in the 19th century; after his death, it was in libraries of the Jesuits in Linz and Vienna and from there, in 1922, it moved to the Bibl Vaticana. It is possible that the 7 double leaves originated from the library of Cardinal Dominicus Capranica (1400-1458), from whose estate Rossi acquired many volumes in 1842.

RISM B/IV 4: 14. Jh.; 14 originale Blätter Pergament, ca. 230 x 168 mm (seitlich leicht beschnitten), zwischen f. 8 und 18 und nach f. 23 eingeschoben: 10 leere moderne Papier-Blätter, 1 moderne Vorsatz- und 1 Nachstoßblätter. Originale Foliierung von f. I-VIII und XVIII-XXIII. Je Seite 8 rote Sechsliniensysteme mit älterer Trecentonotation -Einband: 19. Jh. (Bibl. Rossi.); braunes Leder mit Goldschnitt und Rückentitel.

Die Handschrift gehört mit dem sie ergänzenden Fragment I-OST zusammen. Damit sind heute insgesamt 9 Doppelblätter dieser ältesten bekannten Quelle weltlicher Trecentomusik Italiens erhalten. Der ursprüngliche Umfang dieser von einer einzigen Hand stammenden Handschrift muß mindestens 16 Doppelblätter (4 Quaternionen) betragen haben. Sie wurde mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit um die Mitte des 14. Jh. im Raume Padua-Verona geschrieben. Pirrotta datiert 1370. - Das Fragm. I-Rvat215 gehörte im 19. Jh. dem Bibliophilen G. F. de Rossi († 1854) ; nach seinem Tode gelangte es in Bibliotheken der Jesuiten in Linz und Wien und von da, 1922, an die Bibl. Vaticana. Es ist nicht ausgeschlossen, daß sich die 7 Doppelblätter in der ersten Hälfte des 15. Jh. in der Bibliothek des Kardinals Dominicus Capranica (1400-1458), aus dessen Nachlaß Rossi 1842 viele Bände erworben hat, befunden haben.

Original foliation of f. I-VIII and XVIII-XXIII. 8 red six-line systems per page with older Trecento notation. - Binding: 19 Century (Rossi Bibl.) Brown leather with gold and cut back titles.

Pirrotta dated it to the 1370s - I-Fragm Rvat215 belonged to the bibliophile GF de Rossi († 1854) in the 19th century; after his death, it was in libraries of the Jesuits in Linz and Vienna and from there, in 1922, it moved to the Bibl Vaticana. It is possible that the 7 double leaves originated from the library of Cardinal Dominicus Capranica (1400-1458), from whose estate Rossi acquired many volumes in 1842.
