General Description

One of four manuscripts from the Abbey of St. James at Liège which were split up in the 18th century and now bear the respective numbers 46,43,42(2),42(l). Formerly they were combined in a single codex with the call-number E. 73 (which is to be found on the first folio of MS Vari 46). The present MS is the fourth part of the original codex, and itself consists of two distinct sections. The first (f. 169 to 248) contains commentaries of St. Jerome on the Bible, and is the continuation of MS 42(2). The second section is made up of 3 polyphonic conductus and 31 motets: it begins at f. 249.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A parchment manuscript dating from c. 1300 and meas. 230 x 162 mm, Tu contains 125 folios. Although it bears the same number as a companion volume, Tu is in fact one of four manuscripts from the Abbey of St. James at Liège which were split up in the 18th century and now bear the respective numbers 46,43,42(2),42(l), but formerly were combined in a single codex with the call-number E. 73, which is to be found on the first folio of ms Vari 46. Tu is in fact the fourth part of the original codex, and itself consists of two distinct sections. The first contains commentaries of St. Jerome on the Bible and is foliated from 169 to 248, namely as the continuation of ms 42(2). The second section is entirely made up of 3 polyphonic conductus and 31 motets in Franconian notation. It begins at f. 249, after which this foliation is abandoned. The five pages containing the conductus are here numbered A-E, since another foliation is lacking, but the motets bear an old red ink foliation in Roman numerals at t.m.r. from i-xl. Apart from these pages, there is one unnumbered paper flyleaf at the front and one at the back. The late 18th century binding is of hand-made paper over pulp boards with brown leather on the spine, which bears the following title in gilt lettering: Codic. M. S. || Membranac || Eximiae || Raritatis || Ex Bibliotheca || Cel. Abatie || St. Jacobi II Leodiensis. An old index precedes the motets on f. Ev. The notation employs 8 red five-line staves per page for the motets, which are as usual written in 2 cols, for Tr and Mot respectively with the T at the bottom on a continuous stave. Initials are blue-red and the script semi-Gothic. The conductus are written on 2 accolades of 3 staves each per page with bar-lines through all 3 staves at the beginning and end of each main section.
