Copied by two or three principal scribes and 11-12 additional scribes, one of whom also copied ff. 253-254' of BerlS 40021 and ff. 151'-155', 158'160, and 161'-162. Some texts added (by Nikolaus Apel?) on inside front cover and f. 1 after manuscript was bound; dates associated with these additions (ranging from 1506 to 1519) are only dates in manuscript. Manuscript related to BerlS 40021 and WarU 2016.
Many pieces without text in this source, but identified from concordant sources; count of textless pieces in summary of contents includes only works for which no texts could be found in other sources.
Possibly copied in Leipzig. According to inscription inside back cover, manuscript was bound in Leipzig on September 1, 1504, at the behest of Nikolaus Apel (ca. 1470-1537). Apel came to Leipzig in 1492 as a student at the university; he later became a member of the faculty and served for a time as chancellor. The precise nature of Apel's relationship to the manuscript, other than his responsibility for its binding, has not been established. Apel was perhaps responsible for compiling the music, may have commissioned the work of the various scribes, and presumably played a role in the transmission of the manuscript to the Universitätsbibliothek.
Original covers of wooden boards partially covered with tooled leather; defective metal clasps. Inscription on spine: 'Mensura.'
Identified watermarks include Briquet #14553, #14873, #15167, and #15357; unidentified watermarks (reproduced in EDMR XXXIV, 423-5) include several ox head/serpent marks, a steeple with crown, and a human head with star.
