General Description

A Discantus partbook from a set of six volumes. Each volume is a modern compilation (by J. J. Maier) of originally separate items, of varying sizes. Some items probably copied in Augsburg; others probably of French or Netherlandish origin. Owned by Johann Heinrich Herwart (1520-83) of Augsburg. Herwart collection purchased by Wilhelm V, Duke of Bavaria, in 1585; placed in court library at Munich, whose holdings formed foundation of present Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.

Watermarks: (1) crossbow in circle surmounted by fleur-de-lis (resembles Briquet #760-2); (2) crown (resembles Briquet #4890-4934); (3) pot with flowers; (4) Gothic letter "P" (probably Briquet #8827); (5) coat of arms of city of Augsburg (Briquet #2112); (6) anchor in circle; (7) bird with cross (Briquet #12169). Some watermarks also appear in MunBS 274a and MunBS 1503b

Maier) of originally separate items, of varying sizes. New pencil foliation in each book; modern numbering of pieces, 1-14. Modern covers of gray-blue paper. Modern list of represented composers (by Maier) on f. 1 of D book gives some concordant printed sources for several pieces.

Copied by 11 scribes-I: #1-3, #12; II: #4; III: #5; IV: #6;V: #7; VI: #8 (also wrote MunBS 1501-Rifkin); VII: #9; VIII: #10; IX: #11; X: #13; XI: #14. No initials or decoration. Watermarks: (1) crossbow in circle surmounted by fleur-de-lis (resembles Briquet #760-2); (2) crown (resembles Briquet #4890-4934); (3) pot with flowers; (4) Gothic letter "P" (probably Briquet #8827); (5) coat of arms of city of Augsburg (Briquet #2112); (6) anchor in circle; (7) bird with cross (Briquet #12169).
