General Description

A Tenor partbook from a set of five(?) volumes. One main repertorial layer, with two additional layers: (1) three motets added at beginning of all books except Discantus; (2) 21 pieces for three and four voices added on new ff. 81 '104' of Quintus/Sextus book, copied in choirbook format (i.e., all voices present). Copied by a single scribe, employed by Edward Paston (1550-1630) of Norfolk, a country gentleman and collector of music. Later owned by Frederick Lygon, 6th Earl Beauchamp (1830-91) and by Sir Frederick Ouseley (1825-89), founder of St. Michael's College (near Tenbury, Worcester). Bequeathed to St. Michael's College by Ouseley; deposited in Bodleian Library in 1979.

Early 17th Century. Of English provenance; originated in the household of Edward Paston (1550-1630) of Norfolk, a country gentleman and collector of music. Later owned by Frederick Lygon, 6th Earl Beauchamp (1830-91) and by Sir Frederick Ouseley (1825-89), founder of St. Michael's College (near Tenbury, Worcester). Bequeathed to St. Michael's College by Ouseley; deposited in Bodleian Library in 1979.
