Rebound in original covers of dark brown leather on cardboard, tooled in gold with acorn and oak-leaf designs; green cotton ties; modern spines. Original index on recto of second original flyleaf at beginning of B book; pieces grouped alphabetically by first letter of text, with subgrouping under each letter by order of appearance. Copied by a single scribe, employed by Edward Paston (see BrettEP for list of other books in the same hand and for discussion of related manuscripts from Paston's circle). No initials or decoration. Unidentified watermark with initials "HN."
Early 17th century. Of English provenance; originated in the household of Edward Paston (1550-1630) of Norfolk, a country gentleman and collector of music. Later owned by Sir Frederick Ouseley (1825-89), founder of St. Michael's College (near Tenbury, Worcester). Bequeathed to St. Michael's College; deposited in Bodleian Library in 1979.
