General Description

An Altus partbook from a set originally of five volumes. Copied by a single scribe, employed by Edward Paston (1550-1630) of Norfolk, a country gentleman and collector of music. Acquired by Sir Leicester Harmsworth at a Sotheby's sale in 1926. Purchased in 1939 by E. H. Fellowes on behalf of St. Michael's College (near Tenbury, Worcester); deposited in Bodleian Library in 1979.

Original covers of dark brown leather on cardboard, blind-tooled with thistle and fleur-de-lis designs; modern spines. No index. Copied by a single scribe, employed by Edward Paston (see BrettEP for list of other books in the same hand and for discussion of related manuscripts from Paston's circle). Staff height 12.5. No initials or decoration. Watermark: fleur-de-lis (not in Briquet).

Early 17th century. Of English provenance; originated in the household of Edward Paston (1550-1630) of Norfolk, a country gentleman and collector of music. Acquired by Sir Leicester Harmsworth at a Sotheby's sale in 1926. Purchased in 1939 by E. H.
