General Description

A Tenor partbook from a set probably of 5 volumes (the Altus partbook, GB-Ob MS. Mus. c. 784, known as the Willmott manuscript, is the only other known survivor from this set). Both books contain the name of John Sadler, a Norwich Grocer (not a Northamptonshire Parson), who is also linked to Ob Mus. e. 1–5.

Owned in 19th century by George Weare Braikenridge of Brislington, Somerset; later owners include Jerdone Braikenridge (d. 1907) and Alfred M. Hale. Purchased from latter by E. H. Fellowes on behalf of St. Michael's College (Tenbury, Worcester), in 1942; deposited in Bodleian Library in 1979.

1 paper partbook of an original 5 (T-iv + i + 45 + i + iv folios), 199 x 272. SpetchB s.s. is A book from same set; other books apparently lost. New pencil foliation, 1-45 (one original folio now missing at end; original folios also missing between new ff. 2/3, 3/4, 14/15, 20/21). Original numbering of pieces, 1-26 (partly obliterated by trimming; last two motets included under # 26). Modern covers of buff parchment and rust-red marbled paper over cardboard. No index. Copied by John Sadler, who also wrote SpetchB s.s. and OxfBM e.1-5 (FelAP). Staff height 10. Large calligraphic initials, elaborately decorated with red, green, gold, blue, silver, and gray floral designs, animals, and grotesques; some text in red ink. Watermark is Heawood #2168, also found in OxfBM e.1-5 and SpetchB s.s.

1591 (date in manuscript). Probably copied in or near Sudborough, Northampton. The compiler, scribe, and original owner was John Sadler, a schoolmaster and Anglican priest. Owned in 19th century by George Weare Braikenridge of Brislington, Somerset; later owners include Jerdone Braikenridge (d. 1907) and Alfred M. Hale. Purchased from latter by E. H. Fellowes on behalf of St. Michael's College (near Tenbury, Worcester), in 1942; deposited in Bodleian Library in 1979.
