General Description

Copied by one main scribe (ff. ii'-lxxii') and three additional scribes (ff. i'-ii + 73'-78, 78'-79, 79'-80, respectively). Repertorial connections with DijBM 517 (36 concordances), CopKB 291, WashLC L25, and WolfA 287. Several pieces copied by main scribe and subsequently erased are not included in count of pieces and composer list. Copied in France; probably decorated in Tours (PerkMC). Apparently early owners named in inscriptions on f. i: 'Hic liber discantus mea interest. Jo. Cineris De palacio Bire' and 'Francois Bornand.' Other names scribbled on f. 80': 'Francoys Petit,' 'Aqua Brossemonoye,' 'Jaques Bernar Simon,' 'Gillet Boenon,' 'Francoys Rossynol,' 'Michau.' Later owned by the French litterateur Pierre-Claude Nivelle de la Chaussée (1692-1754). Purchased at Sotheby's sale in 1939 by the musicologist Geneviève Thibault, Comtesse de Chambure (1902-75); passed to Bibliothèque Nationale after the latter's death.

Date/provenance: Ca. 1460-5 (HigginsC), with additions to ca. 1500 (GutiérrW). Copied in France, probably in Loire Valley region (HigginsC). Inscription "de palacio bit" on f. i suggests presence of manuscript at ducal palace in Bourges [= Bituricensis]. Ex libris of early (original?) owner on f. i: "Hic liber discantus mea interest Jo. Gueri . . ." Other names scribbled on f. 80': "Francoys Petit," "Aqua Brossemonoye," "Gillet Boenon," "Jaques Bernar," "Simon Lelun," "Francoys Rossynol," "Michau Ribie." Possibly owned by the French litterateur Pierre-Claude Nivelle de la Chaussée (1692-1754). Purchased at Sotheby's sale in 1939 by the musicologist Geneviève Thibault, Comtesse de Chambure (1902-75); passed to Bibliothèque Nationale in 1979.
