General Description

A Tenor partbook from a set originally of four volumes. Copied by one main scribe (ff. 4-76), with slightly later additions by a second scribe (ff. 76'-78). Copied in Florence; probably owned by Giuliano de' Medici (RedmS). Purchased by Bibliothèque Nationale in 1866 at sale of collection of Nicolas Yemeniz (d. 1871) of Lyons, a prominent silk manufacturer and diplomat; Yemeniz' bookplate pasted inside front cover.

Decoration attributed to workshop of Giovanni Boccardi (SlimGM). Coat of arms of Medici family on new f. 41, as part of initials for Isaac's 'Palle, palle.' Historiated initial for Isaac's 'Prophetarum maxime' on new f. 64 depicts dog chained to tree, with motto 'Constante' on scroll behind tree..

XVIes. Parchemin, 122 x 175 mm. 3 livres; Sup. (CT96), 2ff. n.ch. portant la table incompl. Qu ms. + 87ff. dont les 13 derniers sont blancs. Foliotation ancienne: 1-50 puis moderne: 51-75, les derniers ff. sans numérotation; Ct. (CT95), 2ff. n.ch. portant la table incomplète + 88 ff. dont les 13 derniers sont blancs. Foliotation ancienne: 1-51 puis moderne: 51-88 avec quelques lacunes; T. (Pn1817), 2ff. n.ch. portant la table incomplète + 84ff. Foliotation ancienne avec lacunes, souvent rognée, et foliotation moderne: 1-84 d'après laquelle les ff. 3r-v, 32, 78v à 84v sont blancs. Notation mesurée blanche. 4 portées par p. Initiales ornées en coul. Reliures anciennes veau estampé, fers dorés, dos refaits au Sup. et Ct. Mq. le livre du Bassus.

Les livres du Sup. et du Ct. ont été acquis en 1879 pour le compte de la Biblioteca de Cortona par Girolamo Mancini qui y était alors bibliothécaire, tandis que le livre du T. a été acheté par la Bibliothèque nationale de Paris en 1866 à la vente de l'archéologue Yemenis. Le livre du B. n'a pas été jusqu'à présent retrouvé. On distingue dans chaque recueil 2 sections copiées par des scribes différents, le changement d'écriture se marquant au no 43, la table qui s'arrête au no 42 ne concernant donc que la 1ère partie. Les deux campagnes se sont vraisemblablement succédées sans interruption notable comme semble le prouver la dimension des marges et des portées exactement semblables et aussi les initiales de la main d'un même enlumineur pour les volumes entiers. Il est certain que ces volumes ont été compilés pour un membre de la famille Médicis, car au livre du T., l'initiale du no 37 est ornée des armes des Médicis surmontées d'un chapeau de cardinal. Si l'on admet qu'il s'agit de Giovanni, la 1ère partie du ms. aurait été copiée avant 1513, date où ce cardinal est devenu le pape Léon X. D'autre part, les deux médaillons portant l'inscription GLOVIS, devise adoptée par Giuliano de Médicis en 1515, on a le plus souvent attribué à celui-ci la possession du ms., bien qu'il n'ait jamais été cardinal (Gröber). Les nos 40 et 42 ayant un lien direct avec Laurent de Médicis (le no 42 a été composé pour sa mort en 1492), on pourrait penser (avec Pannella) que la 1ère partie du ms. aurait été copiée dès 1492-1494, si le répertoire n'était trop moderne pour justifier cette datation. Quant à la 2e section, le no 51 pour la mort d'Anne de Bretagne en 1514, et la mort de Giuliano survenue en 1516, en situent la copie entre ces deux dates.
