General Description

Manuscript Masses on ff. 1b'-19 and ff. 20'-43, respectively, copied by Luca Orfeo (inscription on f. 43). Printed Mass by Palestrina on ff. 44-72; monophonic antiphons in square chant notation copied on ff. 1a-1a'. Copied in Rome. Given by Michalis Pacini (original owner?) to Giovanni Angelo Altemps (d. 1620), probably in 1601 (date of title page, which also records gift). Later acquired by Pietro Vito Ottoboni (1610-91; Pope Alexander VIII after 1689). Donated by Ottoboni family to Pope Benedict XIV in 1748, and placed in present library.

i +75 paper folios, 667 x 450. Folios in very poor condition due to severe ink corrosion; most music now illegible. Modern pencil foliation, 1-72, on upper right rectos ("1" applied to four consecutive folios; second, third, and fourth of these designated "1a," "1b," and "1c," respectively). Rebound in modern covers of brown leather over boards. F. 1 has title page and index, dated 1601; Masses listed in order of appearance.
