Decoration

Illuminated miniatures and initials on ff. 3'-4 include coat of arms of Pope Julius III (1487-1555); miniature on f. 25' (= Agnus III of Josquin's Missa L'homme armé super voces musicales) depicts warrior armed with sword slaying a dragon. Other folios have inked calligraphic initials, or have no initials or decoration.

Copying Style

"is overwhelmingly likely, as James Haar and Mitchell Brauner have suggested, that Parvus used [Capp Sist 197] as his exemplar in preparing VatS 154. ... the layout of VatS 154 suggests that Parvus was responding directly to the crowded appearance of VatS 197. He expands the Kyrie into three openings, one for each mass section. Subsequently, he meticulously expands each opening of VatS 197 into two openings; the two sections of the Gloria thus fit on four openings in Parvus’s copy, the three sections of the Credo on six openings, etc.20 (The only exceptions are the Agnus Dei I and II, which appear on a single opening in VatS 197. Parvus expands Agnus Dei I to two openings; he then gives yet another opening, with a blank verso, over to Agnus Dei II.)" (Rodin, "Unfinished")
