RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 15th century paper manuscript meas. 298 x 218 mm. and containing 273 folios numbered at t.r.r. in modern pencil. In addition, there is a stub foliated 275 at the end after 9 missing leaves, which have been cut out. Finally, there are 2 blank unnumbered paper flyleaves each end. The binding is of red vellum over boards with one clasp. This codex is undoubtedly from Bury St. Edmunds Abbey: its contents are formal letters of various kinds, indentures, acquittances, concessions, etc. At the end is a commentary on book VI of the Decretum. The musical pages were removed in 1955 when the ms was resewn and repaired. They consist of 4 flyleaves and 33 strips dating from the late 13th century. The more-or-less complete pages consist of 7 three-part conductus and 3 three-part motets (no. 8 may be two-part). The conductus from the Notre Dame repertoire are in Notre Dame notation in 4 accolades of 3 five-line staves per page. The motets too, which are in English mensural notation, employ 12 red five-line staves per page, but the first piece is in two separate parts while the second is in three-part score. The flyleaves meas. 296 x 227 maximum, while the strips meas. 295 x 30-45 mm. The latter contain 7 two-part conductus from the Notre Dame repertoire and 1 which is otherwise unknown. Here there are 5 accolades of 2 red five-line staves per page, and initials are red-blue. Due to the researches of the late Dr M. Bukofzer, it was possible to see exactly how the 33 strips, which are numbered in modern pencil at t.r.r., make up 8 folios: f. A (strip 11v, 25, 9v, 28), f. B (strip 35v, 14v, 16,15v), f. C (strip 34, 31v 19v, 27, 12), f. D (strip 22, 23, gap, 13v), f. E (30v, 18v, 3v with small gaps between each strip), f. F (33, narrow gap, 6, 24v, 21, 8, 32), f. G. (17, 29, 10, 20v), f. H (4, 7, 26, 5).
