RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 12th century parchment manuscript meas. 145 x 198 mm. The musical flyleaves are now kept in a separate binding to the main codex, which consists of a number of edificatory and religious treatises written in various small Gothic hands. This part of the source is written on 292 folios + 2 more recent unnumbered paper leaves at each end. The binding is of dark brown leather. In 1664 the manuscript was in the library of Richard Holdsworth, Master of Emmanuel College. The musical flyleaves consist of 8 folios only + 3 modern, blank, unnumbered paper folios at the front and 7 at the back. The modern black cloth binding by Gray of Cambridge is dated 1918. This important source, also dating from the 12th century, contains Tro and conductus in two-and three-part polyphony of St. Martial type. All are in fact two-part works except no. 6. The notation is reminiscent of StG A, a half-way stage between neumatic and square notation. The roughish minuscule script is in the same brown ink as the five- and four-line staves. The score notation with rudimentary bar-lines is indicative of an early date. The notation is in many cases om., as in the monodic Licet eger which may be by Johannes de Garlandia; here even the staves are om. There is a modern pencil foliation at t.r.r. If there was an old one, it would have been cut away with the top margin.
