General Description

A musical commonplace book, compiled by Thomas Mulliner. It contans 121 keyboard works, over half of which are based on liturgical chants, with the remainder transcriptions of polyphonic sacred and secular works, with two dances. The book includes the earliest extant cittern music. Sixteen composers are named, including Tallis, Redford, Blitheman, Taverner and Tye. It was given to the British Museum in 1877.

The BL online catalogue gives the following summary description:

Among the composers are:- Thomas Tallis, Nicholas Carleton, - Allwood, Richard Farrant, - Blytheman, William Shelbye, Christopher Tye, and Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey. The staves consist of 12, 8, 7 and 6 lines. On ff. 2, 8, 51, 110, 116 are memoranda by John Stafford Smith, organist of the Chapel Royal, circ. 1800. Paper; ff. 129. Temp. Hen. VIII. Obl. Quarto.
