General Description

Remnants of a choirbook of unknown original size; other fragments from same manuscript now preserved in CleveC D24 and Drexel 4185. These and other related fragments are brought together in a ‘virtual manuscript’ here.

Copied by a single scribe. Copied in England. Folios removed from original context and used as endpapers for ecclesastical law book in 1581. Music folios removed from law book c. 1880, but subsequently mislaid; rediscovered in 1952.

4 fragmentary paper folios (= 2 bifolios), 283 x 145, 283 x 198, 277 x 152, and 277 x 189 respectively. Remnants of a choirbook of unknown original size; one or two other fragments from same manuscript now preserved in CleveC D24. No foliation or pagination. Folios now kept loose in modern paper folder. No index remains. Copied by a single scribe. Staff height 13-16 (variable). No initials or decoration. Watermark: hand with six-petalled flower (not in Briquet); same mark also found in one fragment of CleveC D24.

Notes: Incomplete; though complete (apart from a single line of text) when combined with the other two fragments (the three are scattered between the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, the Wells Cathedral Library, and the Drexel Fragments in the New York Public Library (ascribed at the end ‘finis quod magister doctor fayrf ’), as explained in Fallows 1993a: 5–7.
