General Description

In two volumes.

DIAMM, 2017
Binding

Ms 29 has a brown leather binding with thick rope bands holding the spine together. The covers are ornamented with blind tooling, and there is some gilt on the front one. 1 of the 2 clasps is missing. At the top the front cover reads Antiphonarius Hiemalis, at the bottom 'IITA 1566' (= I[ohannes] T[rattner] A[bbas]). Ms 30 has a white leather binding with blind tooling and the words 'S[iegmund] K[ogler Abbas]' at the top, '1558' at the bottom. The 2 clasps are still intact, but the middle shield is missing at the back and all but one corner piece has been lost from both covers.

DIAMM, 2017
Notation

square (longs for single notes, and tails are attached to many notes in ligatures), with some later additions in Gothic neumes, some of which are of Hufnagel type

DIAMM, 2017
Ruling

10 red four-line staves per page; in MS 29 a fifth line above the other four is sometimes used for the notation, though it is really a guideline for the text

DIAMM, 2017
Foliation

The original foliation of MS 29 has been mainly removed from the t.m.r., while a later, probably 16th century foliation, which is relatively complete, was added in the same position with the scheme A i-xx, B i-xx, etc. There is also a modern pencil foliation at t.r.r. The same appears to be true of MS 30, which is the summer part of the Antiphonal.

DIAMM, 2017
Decoration

the script is at least semi-Gothic; initials are in red for the most part. Large initials in MS 29 are sometimes coloured blue as well as red

DIAMM, 2017
Surface

parchment

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A parchment Antiphonal in 2 vols. from St. Lambrecht in Steiermark. The mss contain 382 and 375 folios meas. 435 x 305 mm. and 422 x 298 mm. respectively. The bindings are different. Ms 29 has a brown leather binding with thick rope bands holding the spine together. The covers are ornamented with blind tooling, and there is some gilt on the front one. 1 of the 2 clasps is missing. At the top the front cover reads Antiphonarius Hiemalis, at the bottom "IITA 1566" (= I[ohannes] T[rattner] A[bbas]). Ms 30 has a white leather binding with blind tooling and the words "S[iegmund] K[ogler Abbas]" at the top, "1558" at the bottom. The 2 clasps are still intact, but the middle shield is missing at the back and all but one corner piece has been lost from both covers. The script is at least semi-Gothic and the initials are in red for the most part. Large initials in ms 29 are sometimes coloured blue as well as red. There are 10 red four-line staves per page; in ms 29 a fifth line above the other four is sometimes used for the notation, though it is really a guideline for the text. The square notation employs longs for single notes, and tails are attached to many notes in ligatures. At the end of ms 29 are a number of additions to the original corpus in pedes muscarum and Gothic neumes (f. 380v-381); these also appear in ms 30 on f. 106v-107, while f. 105v-106v employs heavy Gothic neumes of Hufnagel type. The ink in ms 30 is often brown, as against the black ink which prevails in ms 29 almost throughout.
