General Description

Copied by a single scribe. Probably copied in Florence. Given by Piero de' Medici (1416-69) to 'Piero de Archangeli de li Bonaventuri da Urbino' (inscription on f. 1'). Passed to present library in 1658, as part of collection owned by Dukes of Urbino.

XVe s. 26ff. Parchemin, 219X150 mm. Foliotation ancienne en haut des ff. Les ff. 1 à 3, 23v à 26 sont blancs. Notation mesurée noire et rouge. 6 portées par p. Au f. 26v, 2 lignes de musique copiées postérieurement en notation blanche. Au f. 2v, armoiries en coul. portant les 6 palle des Médicis. Rehure ancienne (XVIe s.) maroquin rouge, fers dorés.

Ms. certainement copié en Italie, car, malgré la nette préférence accordée au répertoire français (15 chansons françaises pour 4 italiennes), les fautes de texte révèlent un scribe italien. Le f. lv porte: «Questo libro de Musicha fu donato a Piero de Archangelo de li Bonaventuri da Urbino dal Magro Piero di Chosimo de Medici di Fiorenza.» Les ms. a donc appartenu a Piero de' Medici (1416-1469), père de Lorenzo et ami de Dufay, ce qui explique peut-être qu'on y trouve deux unica de ce compositeur (nos 8 et 11). Cependant, c'est Binchois qui l'emporte avec 12 chansons dont deux unica (nos 10 et 18).

Rebound in modern covers of brown leather over cardboard, gold tooled with papal arms. No index. Black mensural notation with red coloration. Copied by a single scribe. Staff height 13. Small inked initials; illuminated miniature on f. 2' includes heraldic emblems associated with Medici family of Florence and of city of Urbino (see SchavP for description and discussion).
