RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A parchment manuscript of the second half of the 13th century meas. 255 x 165 mm. and containing 283 folios. 2 unnumbered paper flyleaves each end belong to the 18th century binding of green morocco. The spine bears gilt tooling and the title in gilt lettering. Folios 2-9 are a duplicate version of f. 10-16 and seem to have been added later to the codex. They meas. only 207 x 135 mm. There is no original foliation but a probably 15th century one appears at t.m.r., a modern red ink one at t.r.r. and a modern pencil one missing out f. 2-9 also at t.r.r. The manuscript is written in a typical Trouvère minuscule chansonnier script with the Eastern French trait of 'ch' for V. The contents are the works of Adam de la Hale from f. 1-68, including the 16 polyphonic Rondeaux and 5 motets, together with many other pieces in verse, such as Richart de Fournival's "Bestiaire" and Jacquemars Gelée of Lille's "Renart le Nouvel". This source is beautifully illustrated in gold, blue and red. The initials in the music section are in red with blue contrast or vice versa. The notation is Franconian mensural notation on red four- or five-line staves, except on the added f. 2-9, where the notation is non-mensural. The polyphonic Rondeaux employ 3 four-line staves in score, the motets 12 five-line staves in separate parts. Although single semibreves are set to single syllables of text in the motets, the older system prevails in the Rondeaux of setting one syllable to at least two or three semibreves. One Rondeau has a group of 4 semibreves in the value of a single breve, but this is an exception in Adam's output.
