General Description

The scribe was probably Wenceslaus Crispus, apparently a Bohemian working in Naples (PerkMC); same scribe also copied several non-musical manuscripts for Neapolitan court (now Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Département des Manuscrits, Fonds Latin, MSS 495, 674, 6525). Copied in Naples; prepared for Ferrante I, King of Naples, probably under direction of the theorist and composer Johannes Tinctoris. The manuscript was probably part of Cardinal Giovanni d'Aragona's private library; this moves the dating before 1485, the year of the Cardinal's death, possibly 1483 (HaffnerBK). Neapolitan court library later inherited by Fernando de Aragon, Duke of Calabria (1488-1550), appointed vice-regent of Valencia by Emperor Charles V in 1526. Fernando's books bequeathed in 1550 to Hieronymite monastery of San Miguel de los Reyes, Valencia; passed to present library when monastery suppressed in 1825.

Illuminated Gothic initials in black, puce, blue, green, and gold leaf, with filigree work. Initials framed by irregularly shaped outlines in black ink; decorative columns of stylized floral motifs extend from initials into margins. Decoration on f. 2 (attributed by MarinisBN to Cristoforo Majorana of Naples) includes portrait of Johannes Tinctoris and coat of arms of house of Aragon; remainder of manuscript probably decorated in workshop of Neapolitan illuminator Matteo Felice (PerkMC).
