RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A parchment manuscript meas. 182 x 127 mm. and dating originally from the 11th century. There are however some 13th and 14th century additions, including the polyphony on p. 81. The manuscript's 270 pages are paginated in modern pencil. There are in addition two unnumbered 16th century paper flyleaves at each end. The binding is half leather with wooden boards over a cm. thick for the covers. This is an important collection of tropes and sequences, including works by Hartmann, Tutilo and Notker, together with a number of antiphons (p. 219-270). The neumes are throughout of the staffless St. Gall type and are often written in the margin (for instance, from p. 94-201). The number of lines per page varies from 16-20. The older initials are in orange or orange and green, but never red. The polyphony on p. 81 consists of the "Agnus Tro Mortis dira ferens" with the Tro alone for two voices, the Agnus being monodic. This is the first of 4 Agnus tropes added in the same hand to this page in the 14th century. Primitive staffless neumes are still used here, with the two parts separated by a red line. The polyphony is identical with Eng 10.
