General Description

Main scribe copied ff. l'-26; motet without text on ff. 31'-32 (= Prioris' 'Dulcis amica dei') is slightly later addition by a different hand. Copied in France; probably compiled for Louis d'Orléans prior to his becoming King Louis XII in 1498 (coat of arms on f. 1' is that of Louis as Duke of Orléans). The compiler and scribe might have been Jehan de Crespieres, one of Louis' court musicians (see LitteMR for further discussion).

ii + 33 + ii parchment folios, ca. 178 x 122. Modern ink foliation, 1-33. Ff. 26'-31 and ff. 32'-33' have blank staves only. Rebound in new board covers with leather spine; green velvet (possibly from original covers) pasted on front and back. Inscription "CHANSONS NOTEES" stamped in gold on spine. No index. Main scribe copied ff. l'-26; motet without text on ff. 31'-32 (= Prioris' "Dulcis amica dei") is slightly later addition by a different hand. Staff height 10-11 (inconsistent). Gold, blue, and red border on f. 1'; painted initials in mauve, blue, and brown. Coat of arms of Louis d'Orléans on f. 1': three gold fleurs-de-lis below silver bar with three pendants, all on blue ground. Seventeenth-century library catalogue numbers on f. 1: "MMCXVI" (crossed out); "1496" (sometimes erroneously interpreted as a date); "8018."
