RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A mid-11th century parchment manuscript meas. 146 x 90 mm. and containing ii + 199 folios. In addition, there are 2 unnumbered paper folios each end belonging to the modern binding of natural fawn leather (by J. P. Gray of Cambridge, June 1st, 1953). The first 2 unnumbered folios belonging to the ms proper are from a 16th century document, while f. 199 is blank and unnumbered. There is no old foliation, only a modern pencil one at t.r.r. The gatherings are of 8 or 10 leaves, though one or more gatherings seem to be missing after the first one: here were the rest of the plainsong Alleluias and possibly other forms of plainsong. The contents of this Winchester Troper have been summed up by Frere: f. 2v: Alleluias; f. 10: lesser Tro and processional antiphons; f. 55: Kyrie and Gloria Tro; f. 70: a Tonary; f. 73: Sanctus and Agnus Tro; f. 81: textless sequences (the word "sequence" will be used in this sense for the present source); f. 89: proses; f. 135: organal parts for Kyrie and Gloria Tro; f. 143: organal parts for Tracts; f. 153: organal parts for sequences; f. 163: organa for Alleluias; f. 175: organa for responds. It is typical of very early sources that the organal parts are written separately from the plainsong. Unfortunately, in the present source many plainsongs are missing, but most of them can be found in the slightly earlier Winchester Troper which only contains plainsong: Oxford, Bodleian Library, Bodley 775. Where the plainsong does occur in the Cambridge ms, it is noted below. The importance of the source is indicated by the fact that it contains 158 two-part compositions, namely 12 Kyries, 9 Glorias, 19 Tracts, 7 sequences, 3 Introit Tro, 1 Gloria patri Tro, 53 Alleluias, 3 invitatories and 51 responds. The 3 processional antiphons on f. 179v-180v have not been listed with the organa, since there is no indication that they are organal parts, except that they precede and follow other organa. Moreover, the title preceding and following uses only the word "Antiphona" and not "organa". Another ambiguous case is the Kyrie on f. 190v. Unfortunately, the neumes are staffless and so only tentative transcriptions are possible, and there can be no guarantee of their accuracy from the viewpoint of pitch. Romanian letters are often provided (x, d, m, e, t, etc.), and on some pages the notation is clarifed by the use of the letters of the alphabet, e.g. f. 115-116. The number of lines of words and music per page varies, but a full page will contain 15-16 lines of both. The neat Carolingian minuscule has initials in gold, red, blue, green and mauve, while the rubrics are typically in red uncials. Notation sometimes appears in the margins as well as over the words.
