Parchment
RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century parchment manuscript in two volumes meas. 355 x 260 mm. Pn 22545 contains 200 folios plus 3 unnumbered paper flyleaves at the front and 2 at the back. The paper leaves belong to the 18th century binding of red morocco, which has gilt tooling and title on the spine. There is no old foliation, but a probably 18th century ink foliation appears at t.r.r. The writing is mainly in 2 columns with many illuminated miniatures and blue-red or red-blue initials. The notation is of Ars Nova type on red five-line staves. Pn 22546 contains 164 folios plus the same number of paper flyleaves as Pn 22545. The binding too is the same as for Pn 22545. This most complete source of the musical works of Guillaume de Machaut, and the two volumes contain only Machaut's works, musical and non-musical, at one time belonged to the Paris Carmelite convent, where it still was at the time the Abbé Lebeuf wrote his description of the ms in 1746. Later it entered the library of J. Gaignat (1697-1768) and then of the Duc de la Valliere, where it bore the signature 25. Finally it was deposited in the Bibliothèque Nationale after the duke's death in 1780. All the music except items 1-3 is in codex Pn 22546, again in 2 columns with the exception of the lays, which as usual are in continuous lines across the page. There are 11 staves per page; red notes are infrequent. The polyphonic compositions in Pn 22545-22546 amount to 2 lays, 23 motets, 40 Ballades, 20 Rondeaux, 8 Virelais, the mass and the hocket. Written accidentals are frequent in this source. Polyphonic works occupy folios 54v-56v; 62v; 93-96; 102v-154; 160-164.
