General Description

Copied by a single scribe. Copied in Cognac (WexMP); probably the only surviving remnant of an uncompleted chansonnier originally intended for use at the court of Louis d'Orléans (King Louis XII after 1498) (LitteMR). Given to Louis' niece, Marguerite d'Orléans (1492-1549), probably between 1504 and 1509, while Marguerite was living at Louis' court (inscriptions on f. 1': 'A Marguerite dorleans appartient cest livre' and 'Ce livre est a marguerte dorleans qui le trouvera silneprandrea vous qui mires par orgueil(?) voustre(?) face').

ii + 10 + ii parchment folios, 249 x 187. Modern ink foliation, 1-10. Ff. 1 and 10 (= original flyleaves) blank, except for inscriptions on f. 1' (see below);

ff. 8'-9' have blank staves only. New cardboard covers; leather spine, with inscription "CHANSONS NOTEES" stamped in gold. No index. Copied by a single scribe. Staff height 14. Inked calligraphic initials, several decorated with faces. Numbers on f. 2 ("MCCC LVIII," "1496," "7617") are 17th-century library catalogue numbers; "1496" sometimes erroneously interpreted as a date.
