General Description

Twelve folios as an independent senio. At some point, there were ff. 13-14 which served as a wrapper, but these are now separately in E-Bbc MS 971 bis and belonged originally with the Gerona fragments (E-G frag. 33/I and E-G frag. 33/II). In addition, the MS contains 2 halves of a page from a 12th-century Visigothic Gradual. Of the 11 pieces in Bbc 971, it will be noticed that the first 5 comprise a complete mass ordinary, though no. 4 is in the shape of a motet.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century parchment manuscript meas. 293 x 217 mm. and consisting of 14 folios. In fact, f. 1-12 is an independent senio, while f. 13-14 belong with the Gerona fragments. This bifolio is loose within the 15th century parchment document which serves as a binding for f. 1-12. In addition, the ms contains 2 halves of a page from a 12th century Visigothic Gradual. The main part of the ms has initials in red, green or both throughout, while the Gerona fragment makes use of red, green or yellow colours (the latter adorning black initials). There is no old foliation except xii and xiii on the Gerona fragment at t.r.r. Fol. 1-12 however have a modern pencil foliation at t.r.r. Mensuration signs, red notes, semiminims and even accidentals are missing in the Ars Nova notation of f. 1-12, and this is generally true of the Gerona fragment, which however already belongs in the 15th century. There are generally 8 red five-line staves per page, though f. 1, 6v, 7 and 11 have 9. Of the 11 pieces in Bcen 971, it will be noticed that the first 5 comprise a complete mass ordinary, though no. 4 is in the shape of a motet. The manuscript was discovered in 1925 by Monsignor Angles, who sent photos to Ludwig in the same year for the description in MachM II.
