RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: An early 14th century parchment manuscript meas. 358 x 258 mm. and containing 309 folios. The contents are lives of the church fathers and saints, sermons and homilies by various saints and other items of hagiographical interest. The office of St. Eligius on f. 302v has musical notation, but otherwise the only musical item is the two-part sequence in square notes of Notre Dame type on f. 309v, the last page of the manuscript. It is written in two columns like the rest of the codex with 16 staves to the page, divided into 8 accolades. The individual staves are of four or five lines each, though the two-part writing tends to group them into single staves of 8 or 9 lines. The notation has certain traits in common with contemporary English music, namely the form of the conjunctura and the division of the duplex longa into rhythmic units a long in length by the use of lines protruding above and below the body of the note. The manuscript was formerly in the library of the Count of Olivares, but now has an Escorial binding. The typical 14th century minuscule script employs red and blue initials.
