RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century parchment Gradual meas. 350 x 226 mm. and containing 276 folios. There is an original foliation in Roman numerals as far as f. 254, and this has been completed, in modern pencil from f. 255 to the end. The binding, which dates from the late 17th or early 18th century, is of leather over wooden boards, and bears the words "Graduale Romanum Antiqum" on the spine. There is a single paper flyleaf at both front and back of the ms, and f. 83 is missing. Initials are in red-blue, and there are several miniatures. The notation is of square plainsong type for the ms corpus, generally on 9 red four-line staves per page. On f. 140 and 167 are illustrations of musical instruments. The Tournai Patrem was added at the end of the ms on f. 272-274, using a notation like that of Hu, namely of 14th century mensural type but without minims. The binary grouping of semibreves by the punctus divisionis is interesting. Since it has text in all 3 voices, the piece is written in 3 columns.
