RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: 6 parchment bifolios meas. 302 x 222 mm. and dating from the late 14th century. They have been removed from the binding of an early 16th century printed book, namely the Repertorium totius summe... Antonini archiepiscopi florentini ordinis predicatorum, 3 vols., Basle, 1511. These volumes were part of the library of the monastery of Jerusalem at Culenborg in the diocese of Utrecht in the 16th century. The size of the music pages was originally 230 x 160 mm. They are taken from three gatherings of a larger ms, as follows: A (f. 1-6), B (f. 7-10), C (f. 11-12). Links between bifolios can be seen on f. 4v-5, 5v-6 and 9v-10. The notation is of Ars Nova type, employing all the subtleties of late 14th century rhythmic technique, for there are red notes, hollow red notes, white notes and such mensuration signs as [circle] and [circle-dot]. Each page is ruled with 9 black or brown five-line staves, and the semi-Gothic script alternates red with violet-colored initials. There are texts in French, Dutch and Latin, and the principal composer, Martinus Fabri, is responsible for all or part of 4 compositions at least. Two otherwise unknown composers, Sale and Hugo Boy monachus, are represented by one composition each, while the Contratenor only is preserved of Magister Egidius Augustinus' Roses et lis.
