General Description

A Troparium-Prosarium made up of 2 quaternios and 2 ternios. Consists of tropes of the Missa De Beata Maria Virgine, several songs (most of them dedicated to the Virgin). In the Sanctus and Agnus Tro and the Recordare, only the Tro and the V are polyphonic. The last ternio was written by a later hand: it was originally separate, since it contains plainsong gospels. This MS is from the Carthusian monastery of Scala Dei in Tarragona, and seems to have been written for Tarragona Cathedral.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A parchment Troper and Sequentiary meas. 222 x 145 mm. and containing 27 folios. The codex, which is made up of 2 quaternios and 2 ternios, dates from c. 1300. The last ternio, which was written by a later hand and contains no polyphony, has lost one folio. Undoubtedly it was originally separate, since it contains plainsong gospels and is the only part of the manuscript to bear a foliation, a modern one from 1-4. The notation is identical for both monody and polyphony, being of square type without mensural significance. There is a typically Spanish tendency for single notes to be written as breves rather than longs. 8 red five-line staves per page contain the neatly written music with initials in red or blue. In the Sanctus and Agnus Tro and the Recordare, only the Tro and the V are polyphonic. The binding of the ms is an 11th century Gregorian folio. Barc 1 comes from the Carthusian monastery of Scala Dei in Tarragona, and seems to have been written for Tarragona Cathedral.
