RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: The 13th century parchment fragments in question here are assumed to come from the same manuscript in DittmerZ, an exhaustive study of MüA. Whether they do or not, they may be arranged in the 5 groups A-E employed in the above-mentioned work. A includes the 2 Munich bifolios as well as some Berlin fragments and contains 25 two-part motets, B contains one three-part and 10 two-part motets, C contains the remains of 3 two-part organa from the Magnus Liber Organi, D has 2 lays and 2 conductus, and E only 1 conductus. Only Dl is polyphonic in sections D and E : this three-part conductus follows the first lay in section D. The numbering in the present volume does not take into account any pieces which may have been lost as DittmerZ does, since the RISM is only concerned with extant music. Photographs of the Wolf fragments are preserved among the Rokseth photos in the Bibl. Nat. in Paris, Dépt. de Musique, Vma 1446. The Munich pages were acquired in 1873 from the Antiquarians Kirchoff and Wigand in Leipzig, and Dittmer thinks Wolf obtained his leaves c. 1920. Complex A consists of 4 consecutive bifolios, whose original size was approx. 155 x 110mm., but now they are a little smaller, Fol. 1+8 and 4+5 are the Munich pages, while f. 2+7 and 3+6 were preserved in Wolf's library as 4 and 3 strips respectively. The black Notre Dame type notation employs 12 red four- or occasionally five-line staves per page. Initials are red or red-blue. Complex B was made up of 2 bifolios the same size as those in complex A, and is doubtless from the same codex as complex A. It is possible that only 1 bifolio is missing between the two we have, and so the numbers 1+6 and 2+5 used by Dittmer and Ludwig have been retained. Complex C consisted of a bifolio meas. 142 x 116 mm. with 3 accolades of 2 staves per page. Preserved were the top half of the bifolio + a strip of the bottom half, namely the right-hand bottom corner of f. 1. Complex D was a double page meas. 142 x 103 mm. The designation of the 2 folios as 1 and 6 is due to the assumption that 2 double pages are missing.
