RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 12th century parchment manuscript meas. 493 x 350 mm. and containing 257 folios. The codex is a Bible, beginning at Proverbs and ending with the New Testament. The script is an Italian Carolingian minuscule of the first half of the 12th century. There are large initials in red, blue, yellow and green with miniatures. Capitals of normal size are simply in blue or red, and rubrics are in red. The binding is Spanish and dates from the 19th century. At the beginning are 4 paper folios, the final one bearing the index of the books of the Bible; another 5 at the end are blank. As regards the origin of the ms, it clearly comes from Messina in Sicily, for a note in the lower margin of f. 1 reads: Iste liber est ecclesie Me[ssane]. While examining this ms in 1946, Monsignor Anglès came upon a two-part clausula in the lower margin of f. 122. The notation is of Notre Dame type, except that the upper voice employs c.o.p. ligatures. One may date the work from the end of the 13th century. Both voices are on five-line staves, but the text incipit Mors was lost when the volume was bound.
