General Description

This MS is of prime importance for the history of Trouvère song: it contains 481 songs by Thibaut de Navarre, Gilles le Vinier, Gillebert de Berneville, Richart de Fournival, Gace Brulé, etc. 358 of these works are preserved with music. The motet fascicle runs from f. 179-197 and consists of 3 gatherings. One work which appears outside the motet fascicle as a monodic song is taken into consideration here, since it is known as part-music in Mo and W2. The manuscript is neatly written in a typical chansonnier script, but not in the most refined hand. The music is missing for many songs but not for the motets, though the T are often erroneous. The part of the MS containing the songs is f. 1-176v and f. 224-233. Between f. 197 and f. 216 are some verses on Arras written in 2 columns, while between f. 218 and f. 222 is an unfinished poem on death, also in 2 columns. Although there are 1 four-part and 5 three-part motets in the collection, two-part works predominate, among which the Rondeaux with T published by Gennrich are of special interest.
