General Description

The source, though not as comprehensive as other complete Machaut manuscripts like Pn 1584 and Pn 22545-22546, contains one of the oldest arrangements of the contents known. The musical part begins at f. 148v and is divided into two sections, the first of which includes 23 monodic Virelais, 16 polyphonic Ballades and 9 monodic lays. In the second section, Ballades, Rondeaux, Virelais and lays appear together without much semblance of order from f. 186v to f. 206. Finally 19 motets complete the codex from f. 206v-f. 225. The total number of polyphonic compositions in this source is 19 motets, 10 Rondeaux, 26 Ballades (1 polyphonic Ballade is here preserved with Cantus only, but included in the number 26) and 1 Virelai (again only the Cantus).The writing is in 2 columns.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A parchment manuscript dating from c. 1400 which meas. 295 x 215 mm. and contains 226 folios (the last unnumbered and blank) + 2 blank, unnumbered paper flyleaves at each end belonging to the 18th century binding. The binding itself is of leather over pulp boards with gilt tooling. The spine is red with gilt tooling and several crowns over the letter N (= Napoleon). The foliation, which dates from the same period as the binding, is in thick ink at t.r.r. This source is beautifully illuminated, and even the initials use gold frequently as well as red and blue colours. The writing is in 2 columns, while the Ars Nova notation is sometimes written in 2 columns and sometimes straight across the page. Accidentals are plentiful. The source is particularly interesting because, although it is not as comprehensive as such other complete Machaut manuscripts as Pn 1584 and Pn 22545-22546, it nevertheless contains one of the oldest arrangements of the contents known.
