General Description

In two parts: a Troper, apparently of Reims or Sens origin (f. 1-55,), and three Prosers, of which the first and third are from Reims and Paris respectively. Both parts contain polyphony. There are now 32 gatherings, 29 of which are made up of 8 sheets, while there are also 2 binios and 1 ternio. De Manteyer's hypothesis is that As came to Assisi with the cardinal of Ste. Susanne in Reims. When he died in 1287, it became the property of his colleague Matteo Rossi Orsini. After his death it entered the pontifical library in Perugia (1305), which was then transferred to the Franciscan library in Assisi, where it remained till it was transferred to the Bibl. Comunale.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 13th century parchment manuscript meas. 212 x 151 mm. and containing 242 folios, The MS comprises two distinct parts, the first of which, a Troper, appears to be of Reims or Sens origin (f. 1-55, foliated in 19th century pencil at t.r.r.).The other section, also French, consists of three Prosers, of which the first and third are from Reims and Paris respectively. It is numbered in 13th century black ink at t.r.r. from i-lxxxxvi and cv-iiicc ( - clxxxxii), but a continuous modern pencil foliation in the same position clarifies the present arrangement of the whole codex. Both parts contain polyphony. There are now 32 gatherings, 29 of which are made up of 8 sheets, while there are also 2 binios and 1 ternio ; f. xcvii-ciiii are lost. There are 3 folios without foliation, while the first folio stuck to the inner side of the front cover also has no foliation. De Manteyer's hypothesis is that As came to Assisi with the cardinal of Ste. Susanne in Reims. When he died in 1287, it became the property of his colleague Matteo Rossi Orsini. After his death it doubtless entered the pontifical library in Perugia (1305), which was then transferred to the Franciscan library in Assisi, where it remained till it was transferred to the Bibl. Comunale. As for the binding, only a simple piece of cloth now covers the boards, and both clasps have gone. However, the inner side of the boards reveals that a first binding of yellow and red material and a second of white leather have disappeared. The unmeasured Notre Dame type notation probably dates from the second half of the 13th century. In the polyphonic sections of the ms there are 10 red four- or five-line staves per page for the two-part works, and 12 for no. 2 in three parts. These works are Ordinary tropes or sequences. There are 3 types of initial, small ones in light blue, medium-sized ones in gold on a background of blue and purple, and large multicoloured capitals.
