General Description

Contains Brunetto Latini's Tresor, the Secreta secretorum in French by one Aristotle, some prayers, two motets from the Roman de Fauvel (f. 144-145) and the story of Fauvain with many ink drawings. The two pages of music are written in two columns with the Mot on the left and the Tr on the right. The T comes underneath the Mot, while the Tr in both cases is long enough to continue on the bottom one or two staves and runs right across the page. The first motet bears the name Ludovice (i.e. Louis X), which had already been changed to Philippe (Philip V) in Pn 146.

DIAMM, 2017
Binding

bound for the King's Library in red leather with gilt tooling, 18th century

DIAMM, 2017
Notation

Ars Nova with ascending minim tails and descending major semibreve tails added later (as in Pn 146). The two strokes like semibreve rests, which appear at the beginning of both Tr and Mot in both motets, doubtless indicate imperfect time, i.e. the division of the breve into two equal semibreves.

DIAMM, 2017
Ruling

12 red five-line staves per page

DIAMM, 2017
Foliation

relatively modern ink foliation at t.r.r.

Foliation

144-145

DIAMM, 2017
Decoration

French script with red or blue initials and contrasting filigree (corpus). The first motet left room for a large initial 'L' and was probably the first of a fascicle, though none of the initials have been actually written for either motet.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century parchment manuscript meas. 339 x 236 mm. and consisting of 150 folios. In addition, there is an unnumbered parchment folio at each end and an unnumbered paper folio at the back. There is a relatively modern ink fohation at t.r.r. The binding is 18th century and was done for the King's Library in red leather with gilt tooling. The contents are Brunetto Latini's Tresor, the Secreta secretorum in French by one Aristotle, some prayers, two motets from the Roman de Fauvel (f. 144-145) and the story of Fauvain with many ink drawings. The codex is written in typical 14th century French script with red or blue initials and contrasting filigree. The two pages of music are written in two columns with the Mot on the left and the Tr on the right. The T comes underneath the Mot, while the Tr in both cases is long enough to continue on the bottom one or two staves and runs right across the page. There are 12 red five-line staves per page. The first motet left room for a large initial 'L' and was probably the first of a fascicle, though none of the initials have been actually written for either motet. The notation is of Ars Nova type, but nevertheless the ascending minim tails and descending major semibreve tails seem to be later additions, so that basically the notation is at the same stage as Pn 146. Moreover, the first motet bears the name Ludovice (i.e. Louis X), which had already been changed to Philippe (Philip V) in Pn 146. The two strokes like semibreve rests, which appear at the beginning of both Tr and Mot in both motets, doubtless indicate imperfect time, i.e. the division of the breve into two equal semibreves.
