General Description

The manuscript is mostly written in two columns, but one voice may well cover the whole width of the page if the Tr is longer than the Mot, etc. Most of the music appears to be the work of a single scribe, but the two isolated, undesignated voices of no. 10 are a later addition.

Notation

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A parchment rotulus measuring 139 x 17.5 cm. and dating from the early years of the 14th century, certainly after 1314. It was bought by the library at the sale of the manuscripts of J. F. Willems in 1846. The notation is Ars Nova, with the minim replacing undifferentiated semibreves where necessary in the Fauvel motets. It cannot have been written much later than Fauv, because it has the black diamond notehead with downward stem noteshape for a semibrevis altera. The decoration and handwriting also suggest the early years of the 14th century. The manuscript is mostly written in two columns, but one voice may well cover the whole width of the page if the Tr is longer than the Mot, etc. There are 63 red five-line staves on the recto and rather less on the verso. All are used on the recto, but only 54 on the verso. Initials are in red and blue. The first one, having a two-headed eagle in black against a purple background, is more importantly done in gold.
